I have been painting ever since I was a teen. My mother was a painter.
Art School at University of Kansas was wild fun in the late 60s,
but I really did learn some things....drawing, archival painting,
design and how the art business works from an academic
perspective. The real artworld is quite different, I discovered.
I would show in numerous galleries and sell a few pieces.
Went to New York and had a successful One Man Show in '89,
but the journey has been more enjoyable out here in Santa Fe,
apart from the hustle-bustle of NYC.
Finally, in '01 I opened a gallery in downtown Santa Fe
and started selling many of my paintings....223 in the first year alone!
That certainly grabbed my attention, but.....
running a gallery is 'retail jail'. The hours and commitment are
intense. Big rents, ad budgets and employees are part of the gig.
Again in '14, Suzie and I began a new gallery on Canyon Road,
McCallFineArt.com.
We met a thousand people in the five years since, and now
it is by appointment only and a much easier pace. I can do the other
creative things which excite me...like 3D animation.
People frequently ask me why I paint basically three different
styles or types of art. I paint landscapes of the Southwest.
I paint automobiles because I love old cars.
I paint these mysterious and slightly surreal 'Narrative'
paintings to somehow depict my ramblings through life and romances.
I sell mostly the landscapes. (700+ so far sold)
The auto paintings are mostly done on consignment. (50+so far)
The Narratives are purely from my imagination and
are the most collectable of my works. (a few dozen sold, but the most $$)
Yeah, I like some Dali's works from the 30s....
and Balthus and other artists who test the limits
of painting from their active imagination and dreams.
Painting is indeed my heart-felt passion and I feel very lucky to
have developed the skills to have made a career from my art.
It is a long road, but has been fantastic!
If you want more info, just email me. I enjoy my collectors
very much and have developed some fabulous friends from this over the years.
